Ammu was the daughter of a leading business man in the town. She was a charming child and everyone loved her. Anyone who went past her house stopped by to talk to her. Ammu had some unusual friends too. Every morning, at the stroke of nine, a troop of langurs would appear on the lawn of her house. Ammu would share her breakfast with them. They would gobble it up and have a small snooze, before returning to their hideouts.

When Ammu turned four, her parents sent her to kindergarten. She would return home by noon and then she would play on the lawn until lunch time.

Disaster

One afternoon, her mother called out to Ammu that lunch was ready. But there was no response. She raised her voice, and called out once again. But there was still no answer. Annoyed at Ammu’s indiscipline, her mother went out in search of her.

To her utter dismay, she found that Ammu was not on the lawn. She searched for her everywhere, but did not find her.

Now, Ammu’s mother was agitated. Relatives and neighbours tried to comfort her. She was inconsolable. Search parties were organised. But none of it produced any results. Six hours had passed since Ammu’s disappearance. In the meantime, Ammu’s father cut short his business trip and rushed home on hearing the news. He immediately informed the police.

Two anxious days went by. The police were not able to find Ammu anywhere. Just when they had given up all hope, they received a telephone call. The caller said he and his gang had kidnapped Ammu and demanded a ransom. He threatened to kill Ammu if the demands were not met. He gave Ammu’s father a time and place to pay the ransom.

The langurs were heartbroken to know that their dear friend Ammu had been kidnapped. The leader called for an emergency meeting. He ordered his troop to spread far and wide and search all the places were Ammu could be hidden. It was a daunting task.

Ammu’s parents were stricken with worry and grief. They refused to eat or drink and could not even sleep. They were distraught.

On the fifth day, one langur who was part of the search party was on a rooftop of an abandoned house. He heard the sound of a child sobbing.

He followed the trail of the sound and found it was coming from one of the corner rooms. He clamoured onto the window sill and peered inside. He was surprised to find that it was Ammu!

He raised an alarm and soon all the langurs joined him. When the police saw so many langurs crowded around one window of an abandoned house their suspicions were raised. When they checked out the house, they were found that it was the place were Ammu had been hidden!

The police were able to nab the kidnappers and the langurs became heroes.
