Walking with the postman

February 16, 2010 11:23 am | Updated 11:23 am IST

On October 10, Shruthi Chandramohan, Std IX and I, Nandana B.M., Std VII, attended the programme ‘Postman-walk' conducted by the Ernakulam Head Post Office in connection with World Postal Day, to make the younger generation aware of the importance of the Post Office and the process of receiving and delivering letters. First there was a welcome speech by Mrs. Shobha Kozi, the Chief Postmaster General, and we were then shown how letters were sorted, sealed and handed over to various postmen.

Each of the 10 students who attended the programme were divided into groups and assigned to accompany different postmen. So, accompanied by postman Sasi and Mr. Chandramohan, the Public Relation Inspector, we saw how the letters were delivered.

When we returned, we were taken through various departments like the Finance Mart which was specially built for dealing with cash. We saw how stamps were collected and sent with their brochure and first day cover. After being shown these various sections, we had an essay writing competition based on our experience.
