In what could be termed as a noble effort, the students of Dolphin Matriculation Higher Secondary School have collected ten thousand kilograms of old newspapers worth Rs. 47,000 and donated the same for the cause of conducting free heart surgeries for poor children.
The effort follows the Chief Minister's Free Heart Surgery Scheme in which free heart surgeries are performed on poor children.
"This effort is to supplement the scheme and for that our school joined hands with Vadamalayan Hospitals and initiated this scheme called 'Oor Koodi Udhavuvom', with the slogan 'Donate old papers in plenty and save lives'," said A. Padma, principal.
She further said data showed that one among every hundred Indian children was born with heart problems. And not every child could afford the cost of the operation. That is when the scheme comes to the aid of patients.
The students started collecting old newspapers from their respective neighbourhoods and the residential areas near the school for a month, and came up with 10,000 kgs.
From the heart
The students donated the money to Pugalagiri Vadamalayan, chairman, Vadamalayan Hospitals, during a function held here recently to commemorate World Heart Day to be observed on September 27.
This effort would continue and our students will be collecting newspapers to support this cause, said A.R. Ramanathan, correspondent of the school.
