The science exhibition saw the participation of 52 schools from across the State.

The first edition of the State-level science exhibition for school children conducted by Professional Educational Trust Group of Institutions on its premises at K.N. Puram, Tirupur, evoked a good response.

The event featured some novel ideas like sensors to automatically control the operation of the gates at railway level crossings, bio-fuel manufacturing from different sources and cost-effective robots for cleaning houses, among others, presented by 52 schools from across the State.

The P.V.K.N. Higher Secondary School, Pongalur, represented by P. Jagadish and D. Gowtham, came up with a miniature “pollution controller” model to win the first prize of Rs. 10,000 and a certificate.

The theme of “changing nature by using biotechnology”, presented by Poornima Lakshmi and Remya of Sri Saradha Matric H.S. School, Salem, got the second prize.

The third place went to Government Boys H.S. School, Palladam, who presented the topic of “agricultural technology and farm houses”. The team was represented by M. Selva Ganesh, Selva Balaji and Deepan Kumar.

To add colour to the event, the organisers also conducted an oratorical competition both in Tamil and English on science-related topics like “Advantages and disadvantages of video conferencing”, “Achievements in Indian Space Research Organisation”, and “Today's scientific inventions for betterment or not”, among others.

G. Sindhu of A.V.B. Matric H.S. School, Narasimhapalayam, got the first prize in the Tamil category, while her schoolmate R. Swathi bagged the first prize in the English section. Both received Rs 3,000 each and books as prizes.

Sheela Ramachandran, vice-chancellor of Avinashilingam Deemed University for Women, gave away the prizes.

C. Subramaniam, former vice-chancellor of Tamil University in Thanjavur and chairman of Professional Group of Institutions, was present.
