Be it apparel, home linen or furnishings, the three-dimensional quality of fabrics and their tactile nature ensures that they add romance, colour and style to any room. We tell you how to upcycle all those scraps and swathes with these easy DIY ideas —

• Frame a huge piece of vibrant fabric to create an eye-catching work of art. Such a piece can also be used as wallpaper.

• Breathe new life into old seat cushions by wrapping them up in bright, leftover fabric.

• Add fun and pops of colour to an old sofa. Cut up fabric ribbons and make pretty bows on cushions.

• Line a bookshelf with fabric backsplash to create an arty pop of colour between your books and displays.

• Cut up fabric into thin strips and wind around the thin legs of a table to create a colourful and unique end piece.

• Use small snippets of fabric to create rosettes, flowers or bows that you can use later.

• Slip pretty fabric in similar shades into embroidery hoops of different sizes to create a display that's easy on the eye.

• Forget boring old soft boards! Cover a cork board with a pretty fabric to create gorgeous memo boards.

• Reinvent an old tray by putting a piece of stunning fabric under a sheet of glass.

• Sew together small pieces of fabric you love to create a lovely table or bed runner.

• Leftover fabric scraps of the same kind can be used to piece together a patchwork bedspread or decoupage an end table.

• Use fabric scraps to create photo frames.

• Forget drawers that are dusty and dirty. Line them with attractive fabric and see that leaving you with a smile on your face.

• Small scraps that seem to be absolutely useless? Cut them into triangles and stick them onto wooden skewers/toothpicks for cupcake or muffin toppers.

• Dress up old porcelain sinks in the bathroom with a no-stitch fabric skirt. Helps hide storage, adds visual interest and looks pretty.

• The tail ends can be put to good use too. Simply string up a fabric bunting or garland for your next party.
