Theatre lovers were treated to a host of plays staged as part of a state-level contest.

Theatrical talent unveiled itself with noted artistes competing with one another by showcasing their histrionic skills at the 27th successive State-level play-let competition organised by Kalasagar Cultural Organisation at Buchireddypalem, a half an hour drive from Nellore city.

‘Srikaram’, in which television and cine artiste Gopiraju Ramana displayed his acting skills, emerged in first place with its strong message to the young generation not to hurt their parents and elders by ignoring them while taking life-changing decisions. The play-let, presented by Kolakalur-based Sai Arts, centres on a daughter’s selfish decision to marry without informing her parents, which leads to her mother’s suicide and her father leaving his native place in dejection.

The second place went to ‘Mundadugu’, staged by Hyderabad-based Ushodaya Kalaniketan, which portrayed an artiste’s relentless struggle against corrupt people within his family and outside. ‘Bomma Samudram’, performed by Gowada-based Lalitha Sai Creations, stood in third place as it commented on growing atrocities on hapless women and girls.

At the contest valedictory on Monday, Kalasagar president Dodla Ramanaiah Yadav said that eight play-lets were selected while six groups performed this year. Playback singer Ramakrishna who was the chief guest said that he wanted more opportunities to be created for artistes to hone their skills.

Kalasagar annual events at Buchireddypalem have provided a launch pad for famous television and film artistes like Telangana Sakuntala, Kondavalasa Laxmana Rao, Vizag Prasad and others. Writer Vennelakanti also had a good stint at these events.
