In recent times, mythological dramas, particularly Padya Natakams, are receiving good patronage, thanks to the A.P. Department of Culture and cultural bodies all over the state.
Andhra Nataka Kala Kala Samithi of Vijayawada, which entered into the 47th year of its existence, was founded by Karnati Lakshmi Narasaiah, a noted exponent of Folk Arts. The Kala Samithi, with the joint sponsorship of A.P. Department of Culture, presented the popular mythological drama Usha Parinayam , written and directed by P.V.S. Krishna at Gokaraju Laila Gangaraju Kala Vedika situated on the grounds of G.V.R. Government College of Music and Dance.
The story started with Lord Siva who, on behalf of Banasura, prepares to fight with Lord Vishnu and finally ends with the wedding of Anirudha and Usha. The drama was well enacted by senior artistes and the large number of Padyams rendered by the cast pleased the large crowds immensely.
The cast included veteran artistes Ch. Baburao (Srikrishna), G. Ramanayya (Anirudha), D. Rambabu (Balarama), S. Venkateswara Rao (Narada), P.V.S. Krishna (Banasura), Durga Sridevi (Usha), and Seshukumari (Chitralekha). Good instrumental support complimented the drama.
