Faith in mystic Truth

September 27, 2011 08:33 pm | Updated 08:33 pm IST - CHENNAI:

The profundity of higher truths is that birth and death, with all their complexities, form the core of life and that every individual's aim should be to find ways and means to be free from this cycle. Lord Krishna makes it clear that this knowledge is esoteric and mystic in nature and only those with faith will be able to make any headway in this regard, said Swami Omkarananda in a lecture.

Knowledge of the Supreme Brahman purifies and sanctifies the knower. It is the ultimate knowledge, knowing which, there is nothing further to be known, say the scriptures.

But those non-believers in His words will not be able to comprehend its nuances and will thus struggle with the mortal cycle until they desire to seek salvation. The Lord's subtle presence pervades each and every aspect of creation; and what wonder it is to realise all of us exist in His universal presence, though He remains outside of it. This is the divine mystery that is difficult to comprehend for the ordinary beings.

To lead Arjuna to this mystical sphere, the Lord began with the tangible side of life. He showed the felicity in the practice of Karma Yoga.

Karma Yoga instils a perfect work culture applicable to all, regardless of birth, status, gender, scholarship etc., and includes the Lord too in its ambit. Is not the Lord ever alert to maintain the entire universe with his omniscience, omnipresence and omnipotence?

The Lord advises each one to be committed to one's work and duty in a detached manner without the desire for selfish gains; He suggests that by dedicating one's actions to Him, there is a chance for the individual to escape the effects of one's Karma. What about Jnana Yoga, asks Arjuna. Is it not superior to Karma Yoga?

The Lord replies that practice of Karma Yoga with this mental attitude will gradually make one proficient in Jnana Yoga. Bhakti or devotion is extolled and the Lord affirms that He holds His devotee with utmost care and attention.

The Lord teaches the steps for practice of these yogas and the twin watchwords are practice and renunciation.
