Three young men in suits with full-on attitude are posing in front of the camera. The trio – Nivin Pauly, Aju Varghese and Neeraj Madhav – are lip syncing the lines to a comic song.

All three have funny expressions on their faces. The action is at a makeshift studio floor at Kundannoor, Kochi, for debut director G. Prajith’s Oru Vadakkan Selfie.

“The story is set in Thalassery; we are in Kochi just for the song. Umesh (Nivin Pauly) has some papers to clear to complete his engineering. He has no focus in life and spends most of his time fooling around with his friends, Shaji (Aju Varghese), a partner of a garment store, and Thankaprasad (Neeraj Madhav), a bus driver. They get caught in a fix and that is when the movie moves forward,” says the director.

Manjima Mohan, a yesteryear child artiste and anchor, makes her debut as the heroine, Daisy. Vineeth Sreenivasan comes in at a crucial juncture in the story.

“It’s basically a self-portrait of a few friends who hail from Thalassery and that is the relevance of the title,” says Nivin, who had a great run last year.

“I hope this year will be equally good. I have films like Rajesh Pillai’s Mili, Alphonse Puthren’s Premam, Shyamaprasad’s Ivide and Abrid Shine’s Action Hero Biju lined up,” he smiles.

Talking about his character in Oru Vadakkan Selfie, he says: “Umesh’s parents have big dreams about him but he is quite oblivious of those plans. All he wants to do is make a fast buck.”

Says Aju: “Some of us are coming together as a team after Thattathin Marayathu for Oru Vadakkan Selfie. As we also shot at Thalassery for Thattathin Marayathu, the shoot for Prajith’s movie feels a bit like coming home.”

The camaraderie between the three actors is amazing as they help each other to come up with new steps during the rest of the shoot.

Neeraj takes over as the unofficial choreographer as he suggests some steps to Nivin.

Oru Vadakkan Selfie is produced by Vinod Shornur under the banner of Cast n Crew. Jomon T. John is the cinematographer and Shaan Rahman is the music director. Stills are by Noushad Kannur.
