Rafeeq Ahamed sounded his usual composed self after winning the Kerala State Film Award for the Best Lyricist for the fourth time. In fact his song, ‘Mazha kondu…’ in Spirit , composed by Shahabaz Aman, has won the award for the best playback singer (male) as well, for Vijay Yesudas. “Awards are always welcome,” says the prolific lyricist who is also an accomplished poet. Rafeeq gives due credit to the composer as well. “These days, lyrics often get lost in loud orchestration. But this song had all the simplicity and Shahabaz’s minimal use of instruments complemented my lines really well. The result is for you to see,” he says. Rafeeq had earlier won the state award for his songs in Pranayakalam (2007), Sufi Paranja Katha (2009) and Sadgamaya (2010).
