HYDERABAD: Sangeetha Ksheera Sagaram organised a veena concert by Duddu Seetaramaiah recently at Thyagaraya Gana Sabha to mark the 102nd birth anniversary of Uppalapati Ankaiah. He was in the company of Nemani Somayajulu on mridangam and Bachu Janardhan on ghatam.

The specialty of Seetaramaiah’s play was apt sahitya expression, veena being the next best expressionist after vocal. His meends and swara play bear special mark of its own, carrying melodic lilt. All this could be noticed in the opening number Mohana raaga varnam Ninnu Kori , played in two speeds. The highlight was while in second speed, he produced affects sans plucking the string. It was backed by swarakalpana as well for the charanam line. He then played Vijayambike Vimalatmike in rare Vijayanagari ragam of Muthiah Bhagavathar, in relaxed mood.

It was a plain kriti rendition. This was followed by a rare number Janakaja Sametham in Asaveri of Thyagaraja.

Seetaramaiah then went for popular Khamas number. Seethapathe of Thyagaraja after giving a sketch of the raga, before he went for the sub-main number Sambho Mahadeva of Thyagaraja in Pantuvarali ragam, Rupaka talam. Seetaramaiah then played Janani Ninuvina in Reetigowla of Syama Sastry in relaxed tempo producing melodious music and the play of chitta swaras served the role of swarakalpana.

Adamodi Galada in Charukesi of Thyagaraja was the main number of his concert. It was interestingly structured in phrasing swaras. Tanam that occupies great space in veena instrument, was presented well along with the kriti.. Thani avarthanam by Nemani Somayajulu and Janardhan was gripping.

The final light number of Seetaramaiah’s concert was Kommalo Koila in Maand that he played on audience request.
