Cadences of festival kritis at Moozhikkulam

Musicians of different calibre participated in the Nammalwar Navaratri Sangeethotsav.

A 10-day Nammalwar Navaratri Sangeethotsav at Moozhikkulam provided up-and-coming musicians a platform to showcase their skill.

The festival began with a concert by Vivek P. Moozhikkulam.

Thoppur Sairam was a picture of confidence as he took centre-stage on the second day. Some of the compositions he rendered were ‘Vatapi' in Hamsadhwani, ‘Thulasidalamula' in Mayamalava goula and a sub-main item in Hamsanandi. The highlight of the concert was a Navaratri kriti ‘Devi jagad Janani' in Sankarabharanam by Swati Tirunal.

The niraval and kalpana swaras were a clear expression of his manodharma.

Rare ragas

Yogesh Sharma who performed on the third day began his concert with a varnam in Hamsadhwani. The main item of the day was ‘Pahimam Srivageswari' in Kalyani by Swati Tirunal. Most of Yogesh's kirtanas were in rare ragas composed by Dr. Balamuralikrishna.

Ganesh Kartik began the fourth day of the festival with a Nattakurinji varnam. The main item he chose for the day was the Navaratri kriti ‘Devi Pavane' in Saveri.

Kunnakkudi Balamuralikrishna, on the fifth day, mesmerised the audience right from the very first varnam in Kedara goula (Adi tala). The kirtana ‘Kripajoo' in Adi tala, ‘Aparadhamulanu' in Lathangi, ‘Arivar' in Mukhari, and ‘Manapialakim' in Nalinakanthi were the other musical pieces he rendered. ‘Bharati Mamava,' a Navaratri kriti in Thodi (Ad itala) by Swati Tirunal, was the highlight of the evening.

He concluded the concert with a thillana in Chenchurutty and a Mangalam.

Pattabhirama Pundit enthralled music buffs on the sixth day with his vigorous style of exposition. ‘Viriboni,' an Adi tala varnam in Bhairavi, marked the beginning of his musical treat. ‘Rama nannubrovara' in Harikamboji (Roopaka tala) followed.

The main kriti he selected for elaboration was ‘Janani Mamava' in Bhairavi (Misrachapu) by Swati.

Captivating

Delhi S. Muthukumar captivated the audience with ‘Mathe malayadhwaje' in Kamas and ‘Vijaya saraswati' in raga Vijaya Saraswati. The main kriti for the day was ‘Saroruhasana' in Panthuvarali (Adi tala).

Bangalore Ravikiran took rasikas on a musical journey with ‘Teliyaleru rama' in Dhenuka and ‘Devibrova' in Chinthamani. ‘Ninnuvinagamarithi' in Poorva Kalyani was the sub-main item of the day. He sang ‘Dharini telusu' in Suddha saveri as the main item.

Sreyas Narayan's recital on the ninth day enchanted the audience. His rendering of ‘Mamavasada varade' in Nattakurinji (Roopaka tala) brought out the facets of the raga. The main piece he rendered was ‘Devi nee than thunai' in Keeravani (Adi tala). It was followed by ‘Bala balendu bhooshini' in Reethigoula (Adi). His alap gave a vibrant hue to the day's concert.

Vani Satheesh from Bangalore ended the musical fiesta. She illumined the different facets of ragas through her recital. She began the concert with the varnam Valachi in Navaragamalika. The highlight of the day was ‘Pahiparvata nandini' in Arabhi (Adi tala). The Swati kriti ‘Aliveni' in Kurinji was well rendered.
