Palghat Ramprasadh has a good voice which he uses to good effect. He had able support on the violin from Sanjeev, who was often able to ameliorate the quality of the concert. After the Saveri varnam ‘Sarasooda’, ‘the Nattai raga kriti ‘Jaya Jaya Jaya Janaki’ of Purandaradasa was rendered with lively swaras for the pallavi. The Pantuvarali alapana was decent, but the raga, kriti ‘Ennaganu Ramabhajana,’ the niraval and swaras for ‘Rama Rama’ were all sung tad too fast. What was the hurry?
The Begada raga elaboration was quite impressive particularly when he chose to sing at slower tempo in the lower and middle octaves. Sanjeev was very good too. The Madhyamakala swaras for the pallavi of Tyagaraja’s ‘Lokavanachathura’ was attractive. The thani by Trivandrum Balaji on the mridangam and Rajaraman on the ghatam was interesting. They gave understanding support through the concert. ‘Puraharanandana’ in Hamirkalyani preceded the main item, RTP, in Ranjani. Both Ramprasad and Sanjeev sounded good again when at slower pace. The pallavi was a Dwigati one, set to Adi talam of which the first half was in normal Chatusra Nadai (two kalai) and the second half, the Dritam part was in Khanda Nadai. The swara segments also had lively ragamalika of Bhairavi, Saranga and Surutti. The final piece was ‘Kanakasabhai Thirunatanam’ in Surutti.
