Having been conferred with the award named after Smt. M.S. Subbulakshmi this year by Narada Gana Sabha, Vijayalakshmi Subramaniam chose songs made popular by the veteran for her morning concert. She rendered the raga alapanas and kritis without rushing. After ‘Kanchadalayadakshi’ in Kamalamanohari, she rendered a reasonable alapana of Vachaspati before ‘Parathpara’ of Papanasam Sivan; ‘Harihayanum Ariya’ was taken up for niraval and swaraprastara.
A pleasant essay of Brindavanasaranga prefixed ‘Rangapuravihara’; she could have avoided singing swaras to retain the compactness of the item. After a quick ‘Nivadanegana’ in Saranga, she launched the main raga Saveri, where her singing was involved.
Avaneeswaram S.R. Vinu on the violin played a decent essay. Syama Sastri’s ‘Durusuka’ brought out the beauty of the raga and the lyric; niraval and swaras were sung for ‘Narayani Syamakrishna.’
Trivandrum Balaji on the mridangam and A.S. Krishnan on the morsing provided competent accompaniment and played a energetic thani.
A Tamil viruttam ‘Naal En seyyum’ was rendered in Khambodi, Hamsanandi and Rasikapriya and it was followed by ‘Arul Seyyavendum’ in the last mentioned raga. The final piece was ‘Bhavayami Gopalabalam’ in Yaman.
