Fitting felicitation

Mridangam vidwan Muramalla Vijayakumar's was honoured recently.

A senior lecturer in G.V.R. Government College of Music and Dance, Vijayawada, Muramalla Vijayakumar's performance was the highlight in the colourful function organised by Vijayawada Cultural Academy at Gokaraju Laila Gangaraju Kala Vedika. Vijayakumar, a popular mridangam artiste hails from a reputed musical family.

He imbibed his musical knowledge from his maternal uncle late Kotipalli Suryaprakasarao and was trained in mridangam by late Mahadevu Radhakrishna Raju, a great mridanga vidwan and a legendary guru. Vijayakumar is the Asthana Vidwan of Kanchi Kamakoti Peetham and Datta Peetham of Mysore. In his illustrious career, Vijayakumar accompanied a large number of senior vidwans in their concerts all over India.

During the felicitation function Golla Narayana Rao, secretary of Andhra Arts Academy presented the 'Polavarapu Koteswara Rao Award' to Vijayakumar on behalf of the academy. . The felicitation function was followed by an engrossing dance drama Narayaneeyam' choreographed and directed by natyacharya Ch.Ajaykumar' who also played the role of Padmavathi. Good performances came from his disciples Ch.Srinivas, Hiranmayi, Lasya Pranathi, Padusha, Chaitanya, Geeta Poornima, Tejaswini and Praveen. Singer K.R.Sudharani did ample justice by composing appropriate music for the script written by Pushpalata Mohan. Fine musical support came from Srinivas (Nattuvangam), Anilkumar (vocal), Sridharacharya (mridangam), K.Sasidhar (veena) and P.Anjaneyulu (violin).
