It may come as a surprise to many, but the Vatican has picked the Beatles, Michael Jackson, Pink Floyd and Oasis among its ‘Ten Commandments of Music’
The top 10 pop and rock musical albums of all time have been listed in the Vatican’s newspaper the L’Osservatore Romano, which said that they’re the perfect listening material for anyone who found themselves marooned on a desert island.
The newspaper said its “semi-serious” list, including Beatles’ ‘Revolver’, late ‘King of Pop’ Jackson’s ‘Thriller’, Oasis ‘Morning Glory’ and Floyd’s ‘The Dark Side of the Moon’, has been offered as an alternative to the cheesy tunes which feature at the San Remo festival in Italy.
Aside from British and American artists, the only other nationality to be represented in the list was Ireland, with U2’s ‘Achtung Baby’, released in 1991. No Italian groups or singers, however, appeared in the top ten.
The other albums were Paul Simon’s ‘Graceland’, David Crosby’s ‘If I Could Only Remember My Name’, Fleetwood Mac’s ’Rumours’, Donald Fagen’s ‘Nightfly’ and Carlos Santana’s ’Supernatural’
“A little handbook of musical resistance could be useful during this time of the year in which, in addition to having put up with the rigours of winter, we have to endure a rising tide of musical festivals.
“So as not to be totally overwhelmed, and to remember that an alternative exists, our modest guide can point you on the road to good music,” the British media quoted an editorial by the L’Osservatore Romano as saying.
The Vatican newspaper also admitted that identifying the 10 best albums in the history of pop music was not “easy” and inevitably the choice might seem “partial”.
