The M.N. Subramaniam Award recognises an outstanding exponent of classical dance every year. The criteria for the award, under an endowment instituted at The Music Academy by the family members of late M.N. Subramaniam, includes excellence in performance, audience appeal, adherence to classicism while innovating within its framework, depth of knowledge and ability in disseminating knowledge and also creating greater public appreciation of the classical dance form.

Under the endowment, the dancer chosen will be given the M.N. Subramaniam Endowment Cash award and citation. This year’s recipient is Alarmel Valli, who will receive the award at an event this evening (March 6), 6.30 p.m., at The Music Academy . Having trained under great masters, Pandanallur Sri Chokkalingam Pillai and his son Sri Subbaraya Pillai, she has evolved a distinctive style that is lauded for being traditional, yet contemporary.

The award function will be presided over by Dr. Padma Subrahmanyam and followed by a Bharatanatyam recital of Alarmel Valli. All are welcome.
