Neeti Subramanian, an up-and-coming danseuse, gave a captivating Bharatanatyam recital at Vyloppilly Samskriti Bhavan in Thiruvananthapuram. Also a teacher at the Regatta Cultural Society in the capital city, Neeti impressed rasikas with her exuberance and dexterity.

She started her performance with an Alarippu set to Kanda Triputa. Neeti then breezed through the varnam ‘Velanai kaanpovai’, the piece-de-resistance of the day. The danseuse was at her best in this composition in raga Kamas, which gave her ample scope to dwell on the glories of Lord Muruga. She showcased her abhinaya layered with grace and beautiful adavus were executed with fervour and concentration.

Next was ‘Thungatharange Gange’, based on the origin of the Ganges and how she washes away the sins of her devotees. Neeti’s expressive movements were highlighted in this item in raga Hamsadwani, Adi tala. The danseuse chose to present a padam in raga Behag set to Adi tala. This piece was impressively choreographed by Neeti herself.

The recital concluded with a thillana, a composition by Poochi Srinivasa Iyer, set to raga Thodi and Adi tala. Neeti’s neat footwork and enviable energy were evident in this piece.
