Step up for some fun

Dance wasn't the only thing that Saraswathi Menon learnt at Studio for Dance. She came away with memories that were more precious than the skills she'd learnt.

We're fools whether we dance or not, so we might as well dance. — Japanese Proverb

So once upon a week, an anxious teenage girl asked “What if I can't dance? What if I can't do it?” To this plea, the livewire instructor Sydney, with a halo of curls, smiled and confidently replied, “You don't have to worry about that, I can make you or anyone else for that matter, dance!”

After this incident, that girl didn't dare to question her ability to dance or perform and to her surprise managed to perform in Express Avenue without forgetting a single step. That girl was me; I guess Sydney was right after all?

Family matters

Within just a few days I had a nickname along with the identification of the imperative comic flaw, started dancing around my school corridor, just being a part of the Studio for Dance family. I experienced being a part of a team that shares not only their t-shirts and secrets but also the success and the failure together.

While I was a part of the team, the rehearsals were intense and the standard to be met was high but it helped me understand that nothing comes easy. They don't just teach you a dance style, they help you discover your own style and lose your inhibitions. By doing so they become a part of each individual's journey towards self-discovery and self- confidence.

At Studio for Dance, the instructors address the class as family and make no distinction between a student who has been with them for five years and the one who has been with them for five weeks. How much ever they expand, they still manage to retain that humane touch by knowing every single student's and parent's name.

Everyone from the, five-month-old dog to the 25-year-old instructor is so full of optimism that it's intoxicating.

Value addition

They help each individual identify and enhance their strength alongside addressing the weakness and also know that just by humiliating or disrespecting someone they won't dance any better. Two more days to my birthday and I've learnt lessons (in addition to dance) that I will cherish for the rest of my life.

Every weekend the team performs in Express Avenue, so if you drop by, get a chance to see them perform.

A couple of weeks ago someone told us that “Jeetu sir'” (the director) wanted to speak to us and as we all approached the area where we were to meet; I was taken aback by this surge of colours and water. It was Holi that day and I had always dreamt of celebrating it. The ever so serious instructors and dancers were now playfully hurling colours at everyone.

This is the charm of a dance school like this. I mean, where can you get instant cricket score updates while dancing?

The creators of this dance school were being very modest when they chose the title ‘Studio for Dance', because it's much more than that; it's a studio for life!
