I have worked for about 13 years in the world of business and would like to get into dairy farming. I have a piece of land close to Bengaluru. Is there any programme that I can pursue on a short-term basis to understand dairy farming and technology? Of late I have been reading books on the subject but I feel attending a programme will actually help.

via email, Bengaluru

The South Regional Station (SRS), Bengaluru of the National Dairy Research Institute (NDRI) (www.ndri.res.in) (established in 1923 as the Imperial Institute of Animal Husbandry and Dairying) under the aegis of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) (www.icar.org.in), conducts a six-day residential Commercial Dairy Production (CDP) programme for progressive farmers and dairy entrepreneurs on a need basis. The Head Office of NDRI is in Karnal and has been granted the status of a Deemed to be University as per various statutes of the Central Government.

The CDP curriculum includes pre-requisites for Commercial Dairy Farming, indigenous cattle and buffaloes, fodder production, animal nutrition, dairy cattle management, conservation of fodder crops, economics of dairy farming, cattle housing, besides visiting a progressive dairy farm, which helps in witnessing the theory being put to practice and also to share the best practices that have built in over a period of time.

For more details you should connect with Dr. Mukund A. Katakalware, Senior Scientist and Course Director, Dairy Production Section, SRS, ICAR-NDRI, Adugodi, Bengaluru-560030. Ph: 25711119. Email: mtalware@gmail.com

I have completed B.Sc in Nutrition and Dietetics. I want to know about the job opportunities after M.Sc in food science. Should I opt for a job or take up M.Sc.? Please guide me.

via email

If Nutrition focuses on better health and its promotion, Dietetics is primarily related to food and its management. Hence, one can see a myriad opportunities for those who specialise in these fields. No doubt opportunities are available for graduates; the postgraduates also get better benefits considering the academic inputs they would receive. Hence, in your case, you will need to decide where you would take up postgraduation or prefer take up an assignment.

The opportunities that are available are Clinical Dietitians (primarily work function will be to counsel and monitor patients), Management Dietitians (in large restaurants, schools, hospitals, to mention a few), Community Dietitians (focus on fitness clubs and spas) and of course with experience one will have opportunities for consulting as an independent professional. Based on these aspects, the Nutrition and Dietetics specialists can get opportunities in the government and private sectors. Those with PG and a Ph.D. can also be considered for teaching and research assignments.

My daughter has passed XII (Science) in PCB with 72%. She has also attempted the CET for BDS. In case she is not able to get the Medical programme, what are the other fields of study/courses she should consider?

via email

The programmes for a student of Science that are worth it are in the domain of Agriculture Science, Veterinary Science (BVSc and MVSc), Biochemistry, and Biotechnology, to mention a few. However, the choice would be based on the interest of the individual. There are opportunities both in the private and government sector. Pursuing Master’s degree after graduation will help further.
