Concern over AIDS: The World AIDS Day programme was organised at Government Pre-University College for Girls at Kolar on December 2 in association with Sri Devaraj Urs Medical College. Addressing the students, Deputy Director of Pre-University Education Department M.G. Doreswamy expressed serious concern about the fact that Karnataka stands second in the number of AIDS positive people. The cooperation of students and young people is necessary to fight this problem and make India AIDS-free. Awareness creation plays a vital role in preventing AIDS, he said.

Dr. Anantha Bhattacharya and Dr. Muninarayan of R.L. Jalappa Hospital underlined the need for developing good character and virtues in order to keep the menace away. NSS cadets of the medical college led by Ananya performed a play to create awareness against AIDS.

Seminar: Hemadri B.Ed. College at Mooranadahalli on the outskirts of Kolar conducted a two-day seminar on ‘Quality of teachers’ education: problems and challenges’ on the college premises recently. Ophthalmologist Dr. Shankar Nayak inaugurated the seminar. Delivering the keynote address, Bangalore University’s Post-Graduate Department Dean M.S. Talwar focused on absenteeism among teachers. Referring to a recent survey in the State, he said 48 per cent of teachers do not attend classes after signing the attendance books. Thus, they are becoming a hurdle in improving educational quality, he said.

Hemadri Education Trust chairman S.B. Munivenkatappa and others participated.
