A prestigious American university has entered into a collaboration with researchers in India to launch a centre which will focus on advancements in nanomaterials to address growing energy needs.

The new centre, the Joint Networked Center on Nanomaterials for Energy, is being funded by the Indo-U.S. Science and Technology Forum, a media release said, adding that it involves Purdue’s Birck Nanotechnology Center, Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research (JNC) and General Electric Co.’s John F Welch India Technology Center.

The project is supporting the exchange of four graduate student researchers, two post-doctoral researchers and two faculty members annually between Purdue and JNC’s International Centre for Materials Science in Bangalore. The international programme is also placing two Purdue graduate student interns at GE’s Technology Center each year.

Under the project, students will have the opportunity to spend several months at partner institutions, formulating and working on joint research projects to solidify and expand ongoing collaborations between the JNC and Purdue for advancing research in how nanomaterials can address growing energy needs, said Pankaj Sharma, associate director of operations and international affairs for Purdue’s Discovery Park.
