I have completed M.A. in Economics and want to pursue the IAS examination. Some people say that Economics is difficult for the said examination and there are no coaching centres. If that is the case, please suggest the subjects that I should select for the IAS.

via email

A good number of applicants to the Civil Service Examination (CSE) take up subjects that are totally new. There many instances where doctors and engineers have opted for Public Administration, History, Psychology, Anthropology and even Geography to clear the various stages and qualify. There are applicants who have chosen Economics and qualified. Hence, there is no need to fear, if you have the confidence to take up the examination.

I was working as an analyst for over three years. I wanted to supplement my career with a master’s degree in analytics/statistics. Are there such courses on offer in good Indian colleges or shall I go for an MBA? Which of the options would you recommend?

via email

MBA is a good option but select the programmes wherein Analytics is an integral part. It is only of late that one finds IIMs and other leading business schools offering programmes in the domain of Analytics. It is being studied as part and parcel of specialisation verticals like Strategy and Strategic Management. However there are standalone programmes on offer as well in the domain of Analytics which you can consider. Some of the programmes are short term and some run up to six months over the interactive learning methodology.

Certificate Programme in Business Analytics – ISB, Hyderabad (www.isb.edu)

Certificate Programme in Business Analytics – IIM, Lucknow (www.iiml.ac.in)

Business Analytics and Intelligence (BAI) – IIM, Bangalore (www.ernet.in)

Executive Programme in Business Analytics – IIM, Calcutta (www.iimcal.ac.in)

Advanced Certificate Programme in Business Analytics – IIT Bombay (www.iitb.ac.in)

Advanced Analytics for Management, IIM, Ahmedabad (www.iimahd.ernet.in)

Analytics Essentials – IIIT, Bangalore (www.iiitb.ac.in)

If are keen to pursue Master’s in Statistics, the best place to consider will the Indian Statistical Institution (ISI) (www.isibang.ac.in). The programme has inputs from the theoretical and practical side, which will help you in the corporate world and any other function.

I am working as a software engineer with a Tier-1 IT company. I am interested in pursuing a career in animation; I also have an interest in psychology. I have been checking with various universities. Please provide inputs in regards to the growth opportunities.

Your employment may be a hindrance for you to pursue a regular programme, unless you are provided extraordinary leave to pursue higher studies. Contact some of the leading providers of animation education in Bangalore:

MAAC (www.maacindia.com), 5/15, 1st Floor, 3 AM Cambridge, Cambridge Road, Ulsoor, Indiranagar. Ph: 41690628.

Arena Animation (www.arena-multimedia.com), 53/1, Sura Plaza, 2nd Floor, 5th Cross, 6th Block, Koramangala. Ph: 41501701.

Animaster (www.animaster.com), Sankey Road, Lower Palace Orchards, Guttahalli. Ph: 41138121

Contact the counsellors in each of the above organisations and identify the programme that suits you best.

For Psychology, contact universities that offer the programme in the distance mode.

Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) (www.ignou.ac.in) (M.A. Psychology), two-year programme.

Madurai Kamaraj University (www.mkudde.org) (M.Sc Psychology), two-year programme.

Annamalai University (www.annamalaiunivesity.ac.in/dde) (M.Sc Applied Psychology), two-year programme.

Pursuing a programme in Psychology will surely help you to move to a new domain viz., Human Resources, Training and Development (also referred as Learning and Development – L and D) in a Tier-1 IT company.

Considering that you are an engineer and also have work experience, you can consider yourself fit for a new role, based on the opportunities that exist in the organisation. I am currently in first PUC science stream. I was recently discussing with some of my classmates and friends and thought that I should pursue B.E. in Industrial Engineering if I can select the faculty as an option.

Please help me to understand the scope and if I can seek further information and plan as appropriate.

Industrial Engineering (IE) revolves around the development, improvement, implementation and evaluation of integrated systems of people, money, knowledge, information, equipment, energy, materials and processes.

IE also deals with the designing of new prototypes to help save money and ensure the prototypes function better.

IE is inspired by the principles and methods of engineering analysis and also focuses on mathematics, physics and social science. Students and practitioners of IE work to eliminate waste of time, money, materials, energy and other resources in the finer aspect of lean manufacturing systems. IE is also known as Operations Management, Management Science, Systems Engineering and Manufacturing Engineering.

IE, as we know of it today, encompasses the following facets: Management Science, Financial Engineering, Engineering Management, Supply Chain Management, Process Engineering, Operations Research, Systems Engineering, Ergonomics, Value Engineering and Quality.

A good number of engineering institutes and universities in India provide for Bachelor’s and Master’s programmes. In India, IE has been pioneered and made a discipline of choice by the Indian Institution of Industrial Engineering (IIIE) (1957) (www.iiie-india.com). The IIIE conducts programmes that will help one to evolve in the field of IE. You can get more information by connecting to the IIIE, Sector15, Plot No. 103, CBD Belapur, Navi Mumbai-400 814.
