Youngsters aspiring to study abroad were offered numerous options at the Education UK Exhibition held in Kochi on November 17.

Representatives of more than 25 U.K. universities presented a wide variety of courses before students who visited the fair. The aim of the event was to give direct access to information on studying for an undergraduate, postgraduate, or research degree and on student life and culture in the U.K.

Nelly Sologashvili-Purcell, team leader of the U.K. universities that participated in the exhibition, told The Hindu-EducationPlus that that there had been a change in the subject enquiries being made by the students from India wanting to study in the U.K.

Wide range

She said that aspirants were asking about a wide range of courses from health sciences to arts and management. Students had become more focussed (about the courses they want to choose). Information was also available freely on the various programmes offered by the universities in the U.K.

Ms. Nelly, who is the Deputy Director of International Office of the University of Chester, said that tourism and hospitality courses were among the favourites of students from South India.

The demand for information technology programmes had come down compared with that in the previous years. Nursing was another area much in demand among students in Kerala.

Youngsters who interacted with the officials of various universities said that the U.K. was an attractive destination, as the courses were shorter in duration than in other countries. Those who got a job offer could stay back in the U.K. and work under Tier 2 (General) after completion of their studies, they said.

Seminars on student visas, hospitality and tourism management, business and finance, and studying and living in the U.K. were held on the occasion.
