I completed BDS. I am interested in MBA Hospital Management. Which universities can I apply?

As the importance of hospital industry in providing healthcare services to people across the world is increasing, hospital management courses are becoming popular. They have a very good scope. As your graduation is in BDS, if you do hospital management in your MBA, there will be good opportunities as hospital sector is one of the fastest growing sectors in India as well as in the world.

There is a great demand for people who are specialised in managing the operations of hospitals. Earlier, senior doctors used to take care of the hospital management but now they are occupied with their core work. Due to great demand for the doctors, there is demand for people who can manage non-medical activities of hospitals and allowing doctors to completely concentrate on their patients. As you are a BDS graduate, some of the advantages of doing an MBA in hospital management are as follows:

- You will be well aware of the requirements of the doctors/medical staff as well as non-medical staff members in the hospital.

- Therefore, you will be able to manage clients, that is, patients and their requirements in a more efficient manner.

- You can also set up your private practice.

Master's degree in Hospital & Healthcare Management focuses on developing students with the knowledge and skills required for the management of healthcare organisations, whether it is Hospitals, Pharmaceuticals, IT, Insurance, Clinical research, Equipment, Manufacturing, Public healthcare establishment, Consultancies, NGOs. The programme aims at providing academic knowledge and understanding of difficulties of the field to create professionals.

Some of the institutes providing MBA in hospital management are: Symbiosis Centre of Health Care (Pune) offers Master's degree in Hospital & Healthcare Management. Graduate of a Statutory University with 50 per cent marks (45 per cent for SC/ST) at graduation level are eligible to apply. Candidates passing degree examination through part-time / correspondence / external course / distance learning or in one sitting are not eligible. Candidates appearing for Final year bachelor's degree examinations may apply but their admission will be subject to obtaining a minimum of 50 per cent marks (45 per cent for SC/ST). It's a two-year full time Master's degree programme. The SIU will award the Master of Business Administration in Hospital & Healthcare Management - MBA (HHC) at the end of the two years programme to all successful candidates. Only 70 seats are available for every academic year. Firstly, you need to take Symbiosis National Aptitude (SNAP) Test. After clearing the SNAP test, second round is group discussion and a personal interview. Nizam's Institute of Medical Sciences (Hyderabad) offers Master's degree in Hospital Management. Qualification required is a bachelor degree. Duration of the course is two years and an internship for 6 months. Only 20 seats are available for every academic year. Entrance examination is tentatively held in the first week of August. Apollo Institute of Hospital Administration (Hyderabad) offers Master's degree in Hospital Management. Medical and non-medical graduates from a recognised university with 50 per cent marks are eligible to apply. It's a two and a half years programme. Only 45 seats are available for every academic year. As per the website of Apollo Institute of Hospital Administration, total fee for Master's degree in Hospital Management programme is Rs.1,10,000 only. The selection is based on the marks secured in the entrance examination conducted by Osmania University. The entrance test paper consists of questions under sections (A) Test of reasoning, (B) Numerical ability, (C) English comprehension and usage, (D) Health and hospital knowledge, (E) Current Affairs. You can work as Internal Corporate analyst or as Health Administrator in the respective fields. Other job designations you can expect are Ambulatory Clinic Manager, Chief Operating Officer, Healthcare Provider and so on. Medical graduates generally take care of the technical aspects of hospital administration such as procurement of equipment and medical supplies, research work, recruitment and training of medical staff and the management of medical services. The non-medical graduates handle the operations aspects such as financing, nursing, clinical support services. Emphasis is on legal, marketing, service, quality, and personnel issues.

Over one and a half of all the jobs in this field are usually in hospitals. The remaining are in home health agencies, medical and dental laboratories, offices of dentists and other practitioners, and other health and allied services. Graduates with Master's degrees in health services or hospital administration may start their career as assistant hospital administrators, or as managers of non-health departments, like finance. Graduates from Master's degree programmes also take up jobs in hospitals, large group medical practices, clinics, mental health facilities, and multi-facility nursing home corporations.
