Any student studying in a college in India can participate. The student can be from any branch; however, basic IT skills would be an advantage since the competition requires coding. The participants have to develop software solutions to the topics given by the organiser. The software has to be developed using one or more open source software provided by IBM India. Tutorials on the software to be used and other e-learning material are provided on their website. It is a team competition and each team should have a faculty mentor.

The Research in Industrial Projects (RIPS) programme provides an opportunity for high-achieving undergraduate students to work in teams on a real-world research project proposed by a sponsor from industry or the public sector. Each RIPS team comprises four students, an academic mentor, and an industrial sponsor. The research problem is developed by the industrial sponsor in consultation with IPAM; it is always a real problem of serious interest to the sponsor. Most of these projects involve both analytic and computational work.
