“Emphasis on self-driven interest”

A one-day inter-school science exhibition was organised on Wednesday (July 11) by Jaigopal Garodia Vivekananda Vidyalaya, Vivekananda Nagar, Avadi.

More than 10 schools, in and around Avadi, and across the city participated in the fifth edition of the exhibition which was inaugurated by D. T. Sudharshan Rao, Regional Officer, Central Board of Secondary Education, (CBSE), Chennai.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Sudharshan Rao said, The exhibition is a good opportunity for students to enhance and develop their thinking pattern.

“Young students should develop a keen interest in science without forgetting our culture and roots. Past should be the foundation for the present and future.

He expressed concern over prevailing cultural disintegration in the country due to western influence.

Mr. Sudharshan Rao advised the students to develop a self-driven interest to come up in life. He was of the opinion that students should be innovative and develop original thinking.

“Teachers should accept children as they are and leave them on their own. It is the duty of teachers to make students better citizens and to be a role-model for other students. The students should develop a sense of patriotism ,” he added. Out-of-the classroom teaching, social skills, interacting with the children and motivation would help children a lot, he pointed.

Students of Jaigopal Garodia Vivekananda Vidyalaya and other schools put up as many as 15 models showcasing their innovative concepts.

Some of the projects that attracted the visitors were security alarm in jewellery shops, agriculture motor control using cell phone, ecological sources of electricity, mechanism of a washing machine, automatic headlight dim/bright control, and hydro-electricity.

The school principal, T.M.J. Padmanabhan, said “The main aim of the exhibition is to encourage students to develop their knowledge in the field of science and technology”.

He called upon the students to participate in science exhibitions, which would provide an ideal platform for the students to develop their interest in science and improve rational thinking.
