Q & A

September 28, 2014 05:10 pm | Updated 05:10 pm IST

I have dropped out of three courses so far at the degree level as I have not been able to understand the subjects. I am confused. I hail from an agricultural family and my family has encouraged me and I have supported it as well. Please guide me, as I don’t want to commit further mistakes with regard to studying.

All of us take up studies based on the choices that we make in regards to employment. At times, our calculations go awry. You have not specified the courses that you had opted for; and also your Intermediate (+2) qualification/subjects.

Considering that you belong to an agricultural family, with a reasonably good holding, you should look at opportunities within the area of agriculture. Pursuing a degree programme in agricultural sciences will surely help you.

Short-term programmes in agriculture through the Extension Department will also help. You should contact N. Nagaraja, Director of Extension, University of Agricultural Sciences (UAS) (www.uasbangalore.edu.in), Hebbal Campus, Bangalore-560024. Ph: 23418883.

I am studying in the intermediate class in the Science stream. In Standard X I got 88.9 per cent. I am interested in research and development related to Environmental Studies. Can you give me some information regarding this field and the job avenues?

The field of Environment and Geosciences impact humankind to the maximum extent. Pursuing programmes in these areas will help you to make a mark and also ensure a better quality of life for humanity.

You should pursue BSc in the subjects of Botany, Zoology, Environmental Science, Geology, Chemistry, Forestry, and Wildlife Conservation or BE in Environmental Engineering. This will be a good base for you to pursue higher education. A doctorate will catapult you to the top echelons of research, teaching and consultancy.

On the job front, with qualifications as mentioned above, opportunities abound in the various Pollution Control Boards at State and Central levels. Graduates/postgraduates in Wildlife and Forestry have opportunities in the State Forest Department.

Ample opportunities are also to be found in various Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) that have played a dynamic role in the lives of people and society. Planning, strategising will surely help you to reach the top of the field of your choice.

I have completed MSc through correspondence mode. With the support of my teachers I have become part of a research project funded by the University Grants Commission. I want to know if the JNCASR offers any integrated research programme for science students.

You should contact the Academic Section, JNCASR, Jakkur, Bangalore-560064 for more details. Ph: 22082777. Email: admissions@jncasr.ac.in

I am in II PUC Commerce and will be completing it in 2016. I want to pursue BCom by correspondence and do CA. I also want work on a part-time basis during the study period and my parents have agreed to my decision and are willing to help me. Please guide me.

For a Commerce graduate this course of action is the best to pursue. Decide if you want to pursue B.Com by distance mode or regular studies, as this would be the basis for your future course of action. If you are in favour of the distance mode option, you have the choice of many universities. Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) (www.ignou.ac.in) offers some of the best courses within the BCom programme.

You will also get opportunities to attend classes during the weekends in the form of counselling sessions. IGNOU has also made use of television for the learner-teacher interaction.

You can also enrol for the BCom programme with the Directorates of Distance Education of Bangalore University, Madurai Kamaraj University and Karnataka State Open University. IGNOU and KSOU study centres help the learners to access faculty members, library and even the classroom environment.

You should also connect to the ICAI (www.bangaloreicai.org), 16, Millers Tank Bed Area, Vasanth Nagar, Bangalore-560052 for information on the professional accountancy programmes that can be pursued on a part-time basis.

ICAI also organises classroom sessions which will help you to get to the nuances and clear the programme with ease. This apart, we at EducationPlus would suggest that you start work with a Chartered Accountant so that you are able to gain practical experience.
