The Central University of Karnataka (CUK), Gulbarga, has opened new vistas of educational empowerment to the students of Karnataka. “The university is fast emerging as a hub of skilled and trained manpower by constantly innovating and updating knowledge and information,” said Pro Vice-Chancellor of the University, S. Chandrasekhar.

Within two years of its existence, it has helped many students to achieve excellence in the fields of their choice and provide them the much-needed exposure in national and international institutes and universities. The Vice-Chancellor, A.M. Pathan, who has a rich academic experience, has taken the initiative to sign Memorandum of Understanding with universities in Australia, Canada and other countries for student/teacher exchange programmes. The University mixes classroom education with study tours to reputed institutions for interaction with professors and research scholars.

Prof. Chandrasekhar said all the courses offered are on choice-based credit system and are inter- and multi-disciplinary in content. “The University has a school of study system with holistic undergraduate experience.”

The Central University of Karnataka, established in 2009, is one of the 16 new central universities sanctioned by the Union Government in the Eleventh Plan period to provide quality higher education to people in the less educationally-developed districts which have a higher-education enrolment ratio less than the national average of 11 per cent. The University has jurisdiction all over Karnataka. The CUK has adopted the semester system and continuous internal assessment. Students can choose and design their course of study by picking up components of allied, elective and supportive courses apart from their core course of study. Courses have an in-built component of developing students in a holistic way.

Expert lectures

Besides having its own qualified teaching staff, the University regularly invites experts for lectures. During 2010-011, more than 100 such lectures were arranged. The University is functioning in the space lent by the Gulbarga University on its main campus in Gulbarga city. The administrative block along with classrooms and other infrastructure is coming up on a 621-acre plot at Kadaganchi-Suntanur village on the Gulbarga-Waghdhari Inter-State Highway in Aland taluk. “We hope to shift to the new campus by March 2012,” said Prof. Chandrasekhar.
