The University of Southampton, U.K., is offering a master’s course which will help the youth to gain knowledge about the complexities involved in taking care of older people. The programme, offered by the Faculty of Health Sciences, will enable students to understand and respond to the problems that arise while supporting older people from diverse cultural backgrounds with multiple health conditions.
The postgraduate research-led programme covers the clinical, psychosocial, socio-cultural, ethical and organisational aspects. It is suitable for senior nurses, allied healthcare professionals, social care professionals, healthcare commissioners and new healthcare graduates who wish to develop their careers in older peoples’ services and global research.
The course modules are a combination of innovative and interactive teaching and include web-based case studies, keynote lectures, seminars, small group work, webinars and peer-mentoring. Students get the opportunity to select a four-week practicum from a range of options in different settings. Students can also become a part of a research group comprising international experts where they can formulate and test pioneering theories and approaches.
The full-time programme takes around one year to 18 months to complete. It can also be studied on a part-time basis and be completed within two to five years.
Applicants must have completed an honours degree in a relevant subject or have relevant work experience and evidence of being able to study at master’s level. They must also be in contact, in a statutory or voluntary role, with older people having complex care needs. Applicants are expected to have an overall IELTS score of 6.5 along with a reading, writing, speaking and listening score of 6. They are also required to provide at least one satisfactory reference.
The course begins in September and the course fee for the full-time programme is £15,920. Students can apply for the Southampton International Merit Scholarship of up to £5,000. It is advisable to apply by the end of March.
