PG course from FDDI

The Footwear Design and Development Institute (FDDI), Chenni, has announced the starting of a new course ‘Productivity and Quality Management' from the academic year 2012-13.

Giving details about the course, FDDI chairman M. Rafeeque Ahmed said a total of 60 students would be admitted to the two-year postgraduate course and the classes would be held on the institute's campus at Irungattukkottai on the city's outskirts.

Mr Rafeeque Ahmed said: “The aim of the course is to provide a platform for the emerging professionals, especially engineering graduates. It has been started, keeping in mind the need of the hour in the ever-growing leather industry. It will provide an integrated overview of different forms of skills.”

The course is offered only on the FDDI's Chennai campus.

The institute is affiliated to the Indira Gandhi National Open University and the examinations are conducted by the Open University.

To a question why a postgraduate course on the subject rather than an undergraduate course was offered, Mr. Rafeeque Ahmed said a majority of the engineering graduates would have studied the subject during their four-year professional education. Moreover, at the postgraduate level no one was offering this subject.

The structured two-year programme would focus on concept-building in the area of productivity, quality and maintenance management with applications in footwear, retail, products and allied industries. Already the institute has been offering undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in Fashion Merchandising and Retail Management and Footwear Technology.

Apart from this, the institute offers certificate courses in Footwear Manufacturing Technology with a duration of six months and Computer-Aided Design (Shoe design) with a duration of three months.
