The Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan’s College of Communication and Management celebrated the National Press Day on November 16 with a lecture session by Madabhushi Sridhar, Professor of Law, NALSAR on the theme ‘Freedom of the Media’.
In his nearly hour-long address, Prof. Sridhar gave a broad overview of the laws governing press freedom, the absolute power that the Fourth Estate enjoys and how it is by and large indefinable.
Touching upon the issue of law and ethics, he stated that law is codified form of ethics and ethics is un-codified part of principle of law. He defined journalism as ‘contemporary, critical information about governance in general’ but the big question was ‘who should watch the watchdog?’ given the hostile reactions that the media has garnered among various sections of society.
On the occasion, three Mass Communication students of the current batch who had their contributions published in the media were felicitated by the college.
