I have been working in the IT sector for the past ten years, after completing the Engineering degree. I am involved in software products development and maintenance in the banking domain. I have recently moved to a new role wherein I am involved in Software process and product quality audits across domains and technologies. I would like to know about ISO/ITIL/CMMi certifications which will help me in my work function.Yasesveni, Bengaluru

For the general readers, ITIL (www.axelos.com), formerly known as the Information Technology Infrastructure Library, is a set of practices for IT Service Management (ITSM) that focuses on aligning IT services with the needs of business. There are a total of five core volumes, each of which covers a specific ITSM lifecycle stage. ITIL describes processes, procedures, tasks, and checklists which are not organization-specific, but can be applied by an organization for establishing integration with the organization's strategy, delivering value, and maintaining a minimum level of competency.

It allows the organization to establish a baseline from which it can plan, implement, and measure. It is used to demonstrate compliance and to measure improvement.

Capability Maturity Model Integration (CMMI) is a  process improvement  training and appraisal programme and service administered and marketed by  Carnegie Mellon University  in the domain of software development.  The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) is an international standard-setting body composed of representatives from various national  standards organizations.

The various ISO series has ensured that an organization follows standards that make it compatible and ensures uniformity when there is collaboration and an opportunity to deliver service offerings.

The Engineering Degree, your experience and the qualifications of ITIL, ISO and CMMi will surely catapult you to a different league in your current organization and/or if you find any new opportunities. Organizations providing training and certification opportunities:

I have completed BA in economics and currently preparing for UPSC examination. I am also preparing for MA – Public Administration from IGNOU. I gather that with Public Administration will help me in NGO and Governmental Organizations. I have also developed an interest in Media Management and would like to pursue MBA. I have searched many an institution but find that the fees are on the higher side. Due to financial constraints I am not in a position to pursue MBA; please let me know if there are any organizations that will provide for scholarships and financial aid.— Ashvini Ghatikar, Bengaluru

Staying focused on what you would like to pursue, will help you to achieve your goals. If you are preparing for the UPSC competitive examinations, then you should concentrate and ensure a wide intensive study of the subjects that you have identified. Public Administration as a subject does help you to get to nuances of Organizations and its management.

It gives a primary understanding that you can apply in the organizations which can be considered as learning organizations.

Your interest in Media Management is understandable; the MBA programme is a two year, four semester programme that a number of academic institutions have been catering to. In regards to the fees, financial aid may not be forthcoming; however, you should connect with banks to get an education loan.

I am currently studying in II PUC (HESPy). I want to opt for History as a career. But I have heard people speaking negatively about its scope. I want to know the different options that I have if I pursue History.—Anusha Shetty, Mangaluru

A career in the subject of History will take you through Graduation (UG) (BA with History as an optional), Post Graduation (PG) (MA – History, Archaeology and Heritage) and Doctorate (PhD). One aspect that we have to realize is, every subject has its own scope and we as learners have to use them to the best of our ability. The options available as you proceed with your studies are:

Teaching: With a Doctorate in History, you have opportunities to join the Higher Education (College and University) environment as a faculty member. If are keen to teach in the School environment, then Bachelor of Education (BEd) programme is mandatory. BEd has to be pursued after Graduation and you will have to specialize in Social Studies.

Archival Studies: This is primarily preservation of documents. The focus is mainly on the modern and contemporary history. Hence at the PG level you will have to specialize in Modern History. You can get to the job of an Archivist, which helps in the preservation of information for future use. National Archives of India (www.nationalarchives.nic.in) (estbd. 1891), conducts the one-year Diploma in Archives and Records Management and other short term programmes, which will interest you.

Archaeology: The field of Archaeology, preservation and conservation of monuments surely has plenty of opportunities. You will need to pursue specialized programmes in Archaeology that Universities have to offer. Besides, in India, the Institute of Archaeology (www.asi.nic.in) is a centre of excellence to pursue interests and create employment opportunities.

Business History: Indian Institute of Management – Kozhikode (IIMK) (www.iimk.ac.in) has created the first ever Business Museum of India.

Tourism and Travel: Those with background of History have fared well as Tour Guides, Marketing Executives, where heritage and archeaology is marketed to tourists who come from all parts of the world. Skills of communication will come in handy in this field. The other alternative to get to the Tourism, Travel and Hospitality field would be to pursue MBA (Tourism) and/or Master of Tourism Administration (MTA); which will clearly help you to get to a career of using History in a practical manner and ensuring success for yourself.

Civil Service Examinations: Many of the candidates who appear for the UPSC Civil Service Examinations opt for History as an optional. You too should consider this as one of the options.
