How many of you have aspired to study abroad? It is likely there will be a 100 per cent consensus on this question.

But what follows this aspiration is difficult and quite often tedious. Looking for colleges may be the first step to opening up your arena of choices.

But the most important decision will be the funding and scholarships that the universities offer.

More often than not we are stumped when the funding or our choice of college does not suit our pockets or taste.

This is where colleges like Management Development Institute of Singapore (MDIS) step in.

Sample this: You want to study in the University of Bradford but it’s expensive and far and there are not many seats left.

What if you do the same course and acquire the same certificate closer home?

Founded in 1956, MDIS today boasts of nine academic schools with students from more than 76 countries and 10 university partners.

Equivalent degree

As a college they deliver high-quality standards of education and their university partners continue to uphold their quality through various quality systems. The college received the EduTrust Certification (four years), awarded by the Council for Private Education, in 2010.

All students are assessed based on the same standards. Therefore, the degree awarded is exactly the same as the on-campus one.

In fact all the programmes conducted by MDIS are registered with the Ministry of Education. The degrees are also recognised by the Public Service Commission, Singapore.

The institute provides well-accredited courses, seminars opportunities and management services to develop professionally in business and management, engineering, fashion design, information technology, life sciences, mass communications, psychology and travel, tourism and hospitality management.

They are offered in collaboration with highly acclaimed universities in Australia, France, U.K. and the U.S. Occupying a three hectare area MDIS has state-of-the-art classrooms, life sciences and computer laboratories, a hospitality training centre, a mass communications studio, engineering laboratory and workshop, a fashion studio, sports facilities such as a gymnasium and badminton courts. The campus also has an amphitheatre to house art performances and other events.

In addition, MDIS enhances students’ learning experience with the blackboard learning system and video streaming technology which allow online access to lecture notes, learning resources and recorded lessons just about anywhere, anytime.

Course conduct

Some of the key highlights are:

It’s fully taught — students must attend weekly lectures and tutorials.

Contacts with the lecturers are on a more frequent basis.

Distance learning — students are in contact with their tutors through intensive block sessions over a limited period of time. In a distance learning mode, students study their course material outside a traditional classroom but with full support from tutors. During the session with the tutors, students can seek clarifications on issues that need further understanding.

The year 2008 saw the college set up its first overseas campus in Tashkent, Central Asia, to offer world-class education to students from this region.

MDIS has a university status that is granted by the Uzbekistan government. MDIS is now busy setting up its second campus in Malaysia which will be positioned as a university college.

It will offer courses in business management, information technology, digital media, mass communications and, travel and tourism.
