Fee reimbursement: changes proposed

June 15, 2010 11:36 pm | Updated 11:36 pm IST - HYDERABAD

The criteria for granting scholarships and fee reimbursement to students belonging to weaker sections is proposed to be changed as the government does not want the benefit to go to those hailing from well-to-do families.

Scholarships and fee reimbursement will not be granted to students whose annual parental income is above Rs. one lakh. For renewal of these benefits, there may be an insistence on 75 per cent class attendance. Minister for Social Welfare Minister Pilli Subhash Chandra Bose indicated these possible changes while talking with reporters after a member of a Cabinet sub-committee held a meeting with representatives of the engineering and professional colleges here at Secretariat on Tuesday.

Mr. Bose said a final view on the criteria would be taken after an “open debate” being organised by the committee on June 22 at Jubilee Hall with representatives of managements and leaders of the students' unions.

He said the committee would submit its report in 10 days to enable the government to adopt new guidelines for the new academic year.
