A passion for digital media

Suryabala Shenbagamurthy

I left behind a fantastic job and a promising future in Bengaluru to pursue an M.S. in Public Relations and Corporate Communications at New York University (NYU).

NYU gave me the environment to find my passion, explore opportunities and be inspired by my classmates. In the first semester, I was elected the president of NYU International Club. I interacted with students from various countries such as Russia, China and Africa and discussed common issues among students transitioning from different cultures. Hailing from Coimbatore, a small town, I was able to empathise with my fellow international students who were overwhelmed by the new environment. In the next couple of months, we worked together with the management and put forth successful programmes such as social mixer and career development sessions to better support the international student community on the campus. I acquired leadership skills in the process, and a fellow classmate and a United Nations (UN) senior employee recommended me for an internship at the UN headquarters.

This was my first internship in the United States. I was nervous, amazed, and, at the same time, super thrilled to be working at a global organisation. I was supporting the media and communications team during the 2014 Climate Change summit that took place in New York City. It was truly a great experience as I met many global leaders and attended their events about gender equality and environment conservation. I also participated in the 2014 UN International Young Leaders Assembly. As recognition for my work at the UN, I was awarded the NYU Wasserman Internship Grant.

Closer to end of the master’s programme, I took a special interest for digital media and swapped a class from my course with web analytics, a concentration course in integrated marketing. I was surprised by the support I received from my academic advisor who was very accommodating to the change in my coursework and encouraged me to pursue my interest. As part of the coursework, I participated in the 2015 Google Online Marketing Challenge and helped a small business to build brand awareness by executing Google AdWords campaign. Over this period, I realised my passion for digital advertising and thought of establishing a career as a digital media specialist. I discussed my profound interest with an NYU faculty, and in no time, I was interacting with many specialists from the industry including Google employees. I am now an NYU graduate and I work at a digital media agency in New York City. Without the M.S. programme and resources provided by NYU, I wouldn’t be the person I am today.

I would strongly encourage those who are interested in studying abroad to be prepared for the hardship and make the best out of all the opportunities that come your way.
