Two gated communities — KG Green Meadows and KG Green Condominiums — in the Box Area at Andal Nagar Extension in Velachery have not been receiving Metrowater supply through the pipelines for the last two months.

Residents of these apartments ask: “When the adjoining neighbourhoods of Box Area — Sri Nagar Colony and Nethaji Colony — get Metrowater supply on alternative days, why is Box Area alone not receiving Metro water supply. Not even once a week. Our locality has a pipeline connection but for reasons unknown, it has been shut. Now, both the apartments are solely dependent on Metrowater tankers.”

According to Prabhakar, a member of Residents’ Welfare Association of KG Green Condominiums, “Our apartment has 24 households and we buy 27,000 litres of water per week. We spend around Rs. 2,250 a week.”

“As a cost-cutting measure, we are planning to supply water from the overhead tank of our apartment from 6 a.m. to 9 a.m. from October 1. Residents have to adopt frugality in the consumption of water. If members don’t agree, the other option is for each household to pay Rs.300 in addition to their monthly maintenance. As of now, we are managing with the funds meant for maintenance. If the crisis continues, we may have to start spending from the Association’s corpus funds.”

Along with these apartments, around 20 independent households in Box Area that are not part of the gated community are also affected, say residents.

“Unlike the apartments, where all the expenses are borne by residents of the apartments, individual households have to bear the expenditure single-handedly. My sump’s capacity is 3000 litres but I need to buy a minimum of 6,000 litres. So, I give the remaining 3,000 litres to the apartments,” says Jeevanandham.
