For many years now, traffic on the stretch between Christ King Girls’ Higher Secondary School and UCO Bank on Velachery Main Road in East Tambaram moves at snail’s pace, especially during the rush hour as electricity posts are placed in the middle of the road. Traffic slows down near the school.
The situation is worse at night, as poor illumination adds a new dimension to the problem.
"At Medavakkam, Sembakkam, Rajakilpakkam, and other places on Velachery Main Road, the poles are 50 metres away from the road but on the stretch between the school and the bank, the poles are located on the thoroughfare. The electricity department should relocate the posts at the earliest in the interests of the safety of safety of road users,” R. Raja, a resident, said. Here, the road space is too narrow for vehicles to pass and so the poles must be shifted at the earliest, he pointed out.
Poor illumination also brings another problem: the risk of pedestrian slipping and falling into sewer drains. To make things worse, some indulge in rash and reckless driving, much to the dismay of other road users.
“There is hardly any space on the either side. Motorists must be careful and drive slowly when traversing this section of the Velachery Main Road,” a few motorists said.
