Thrilling victory for Abdul Malik CA

Abdul Malik CA came through a tough semi-final before taking home the trophy in style.

Abdul Malik CA kept its cool to win a tense semifinal before breezing through the final of the Chockalingam Memorial Trophy under-14 Twenty20 tournament, organised by Gee Ge CA.

Defending a total of 106 in the last-four clash, the Abdul Malik boys displayed grit and character after Cricket Drome had got off to a bright start. Skipper P. Kumaravel and fellow off-spinner Adnan Khan pulled things back and turned the contest in Abdul Malik’s favour with superb spells.

Once it passed the semifinal test, Abdul Malik CA brooked no resistance in the summit clash, crushing DCA by nine wickets with nearly 10 overs to spare. Chief coach Abdul Malik was delighted with the way his wards performed in the climactic phase. “Cricket Drome had made a good beginning and it required an extraordinary effort to change the course of the match. Fortunately, Kumaravel and Adnan, both State players, stepped in,” he said.

Apart from bowling and leading the side admirably, Kumaravel was in top form with the bat too, scoring 72 (against Cricket Drome) and 79 (versus Anna Gem CA) in the league phase.

Saqlain Mushtaq and Shubhang Mishra were the other players who chipped in with their bit for Abdul Malik CA. “The two gave us solid starts in most of the games. To top that, Saqlain was efficient behind the stumps while Shubhang took crucial wickets with his medium pace,” said the coach.

He felt that allowing the boys to “take their own decisions” was the key to their success. “All my coaching ends during practice and it is the boys who have to handle things in a match. Being a part of decision-making has made them more mature and responsible,” said Abdul Malik, whose ambition is to see at least one player from his academy don the India colours. The scores (final): DCA 76 for seven in 17 overs lost to Abdul Malik CA 77 for one in 10.2 overs (Saqlain Mushtaq 33). Man-of-the-final: Saqlain.
