The responsible walk

On Sunday, members of Walkers of Boat Club Avenue will carry poop scoops with them as they go on their morning walk.

The exercise is aimed at promoting cleanliness and also to encourage do owners to carry poop scoop when they walk their dogs. They will also clean the stretch from 7 a.m. onwards on April 3.

This is the first such campaign of the Walkers of Boat Club Avenue, a voluntary group started recently, which has 80 volunteers. The initiative ‘Clean India’ is being led by members D. Mohandas and Anitha Subramaniam.

“Walkers to the Boat Club who come with their pets do not clear the poop,” says Mohandas explaining how the idea was born. “In western countries, pet owners are penalised if they don’t remove the excreta left behind by their canines on the streets,” says Mohandas, a resident of RA Puram who has been walking in the area for the last two decades.

On Sunday, walkers will fan out in groups to clean the Boat Club Area. Over 20 members are expected to take part in this initiative. Members plan to make this clean-up campaign regular. Residents of Boat Club have also come forward to lend their support to it.

“We plan to bury the organic waste near the trees, which in turn will degrade and convert into manure,” he says, adding that Ramky Enviro Engineers has offered to assist the Walkers in this campaign. For details, contact Mohandas at 9444170621
