When C.S. Baskar saw this board, announcing the availability of parking space, placed outside a vacant plot near the Mylapore Club, he was delighted. For him, it meant some roads would be free of cars parked haphazardly on the margins. Of late, the streets of Mylapore have shrunk, with vehicles occupying most of the space due to non-availability of parking especially within apartment complexes.
The plot, which is owned by the Kapleeshwarar Temple, has been levelled and is ready to be converted into a parking lot. “A land measuring 32 grounds was let out to the Mylapore Club, which constructed a building on a portion of the space. The club filed a petition stating its inability to pay rent for the entire land. Meanwhile, they surrendered 18 grounds and retained the building. The space has been lying vacant for nearly two years now. To use this land productively, this idea was mooted. This would not only give residents a safe parking place for their vehicle but also generate income for the temple. It will also protect the land from encroachments,” says a TNHRCE official.
The parking lot can accommodate 150 cars, with a rent of Rs. 3,000 per month for a car. People using the space will be given an ID card. Watchmen will be appointed to man the parking lot day and night. Similar parking facilities have been provided at some temple properties the city. For instance, the Triplcane Parthasarathy Temple has rented out its land for car parking at Big Street.
Application for renting the space is available at the temple office. For details, call 94449 11054/2464 1670.
