Driving on the Main Road in ‘D’ Sector of Sourdariya Colony in Mogappair is now fraught with danger, as a portion of the newly-laid stretch, which recently caved in, has been left unattended.

Motorists and pedestrians are careful to avoid using the space near the sunken portion of the stretch. With poor illumination, however, many pedestrians and motorists hurt themselves by hitting the damaged portion.

“I was surprised when I saw the portion of the road that sunk just as I was about to pass by. At night, the damaged portion poses a grave danger to motorists,” said S. Krishna, a motorist from Padi.

Following reports of accidents, a few residents and traffic police placed an unused old wooden chair on the damaged portion to warn others.

Corporation officials said the fault might be due to improper levelling of the stretch with debris and blue metal, before it was laid with bitumen. Seepage due to recent rains might have loosened the soil beneath the unlevelled portion causing the road to cave in.“With many schools in the neighbourhood, the road sees heavy traffic flow. So, the condition of the stretch is important for the safety of road users,” said V. Lakshmi, a resident of in Mogappair.Corporation officials said that steps would be taken to level the damaged portion soon. A team of local body officials would inspect the spot to assess the damage.Subsequently, a detailed plan to level it, first with concrete mix and later with bitumen, would be created.
