The new speed breaker near the traffic junction in Villivakkam on New Avadi Road is of no use. There has been a delay in painting markings on the speed breaker. As a result, motorists fail to notice it from a distance, which defeats the purpose of having a speed breaker. Poor illumination and encroachments in the form of huts on the stretch, especially where the new speed breaker is located, make the stretch accident-prone.
The New Avadi Road is a busy stretch, which registers, on an average, a volume of around 40,000 vehicles a day. The Road connects Padi with Ayanavaram and is one of the shorter routes to reach many parts of the city including areas like Egmore, Anna Salai, and most motorists prefer it the Poonamallee High Road route.
First Main Road, AmbatturUnlike speed breakers found in most other parts of the city, three speed breakers found on First Main Road in Ambattur Industrial Estate spread across both sides of the stretch. These speed breakers are not adequately spaced.
They were laid nearly a decade ago and the markings on them faded many months ago and puts motorists at risk, especially during night as the stretch is poorly-lit.
More importantly, the speed breakers on both sides of the stretch are located near the intersection of Second Main Road and Third Main Road. The road is widely used by the workers employed at the industrial units in Ambattur.
“When we come from Second Main Road, we have to take a ‘right turn’ for Third Main Road and then find ourselves having to negotiate a succession of speed breakers that lack reflectors or white markings. Due to this, motorists skid and get hurt,” said S. Sivakumar, a motorist from Mannurpet.
Vepery Main RoadVepery Main Road is one of important roads and is lined with apartments and commercial buildings. Though the Corporation is constructing a concrete median on the stretch now, the new speed breakers in front of Guru Shree Shantivijai Jain College for Women lack markings. Unlike the portion of the stretch near the Tamil Nadu Veterinary College, which is narrow, the one near the college is wide making it convenient for motorists, especially motorcyclists, to throttle up especially after they cross the T.N. Veterinary College.
“Motorists, especially bikers, are scared of crossing the stretch and often skid while having to suddenly negotiate the speed breakers. Bright markings on the speed breakers alone would prevent motorists from speeding on this stretch,” said S. Harikesh, a resident of Vepery.
