Rash driving on the street lanes in Ram Nagar, near the Rackie theatre in Ambattur Old Town (OT), is taking its toll on residents. They want the civic officials of Zone – 7 (Ambattur) to construct speed breakers on busy street lanes in the neighbourhood to prevent rash driving.

Every day, hundreds of motorists from Cholembedu, Sholapuram, Mounaswami Madan, Oragadam, Old Township Road, Venketapuram, Krishnapuram and K.K. Road use the Surapet Main Road, which connects Ambattur and Red Hills, to reach the bus terminus at Ambattur on CTH Road and also to reach the city via Maduravoyal and Anna Nagar.

“Many street lanes in Ram Nagar are risky as motorists go at high speed putting walkers especially children who play on these stretches at risk,” said K.Saravanan, a resident of Ambattur.

Street lanes such as Jawarhar Street and Bank Street in Ram Nagar are more prone to accidents as motorists drive at breakneck speed to reach the Surapet Main Road in Ambattur.

Accidents are frequent, especially near the park in Bank Street and near a bank in Jawarhar Street, as many residents visit the two public facilities. “As the neighbourhood (Ram Nagar) is close to the Surapet Main Road, a state highway, motorists from the locality drive fast to reach the Main Road with no regard for pedestrians,” said S. Vanmathi, a resident of Ambattur.

At present, the neighbourhood has only one speed breaker at the intersection of Bank Street and Surapet Main Road to prevent accidents on the state highway. However, residents want the civic body to lay speed breakers on important street lanes that have public utilities such as banks, Tangedco office, PDS outlet and park.

“Efforts would be taken to identify spots that need speed breakers on key street lanes. Subsequently, speed breakers would be laid on the identified spots,” said a Corporation official.
