Residents of Dr. Ambedkar Nagar, Medavakkam, have requested the Medavakkam Village Panchayat to stop burning of garbage in the Medavakkam lake. Residents complain that every day tonnes of garbage are dumped and burned in the lake.

On most days, one finds a thick blanket of smoke covering the two arterial stretches in the vicinity, namely Velachery Main Road and Sholinganallur-Medavakkam Road.

Residents on Anna Street have their windows closed as a portion of the lake is proximate to the stretch.

“The dumping and burning of waste in the waterbody has contaminated the groundwater. We are unable to breathe fresh air and can’t sleep at night due to the pervasive and persistent smell. Several complaints to the Panchayat have been in vain,” residents said.

“The burning of garbage happens at night when lorries dump the garbage. When I took up the issue with the Panchayat officials, they said miscreants set fire to the garbage. Owing to this, residents, especially senior citizens and children, suffer from respiratory problems and suffer various infections,” K. Chockalingam, a resident of Anna Street, said.

“We have been suffering from this for the past four years. In the evenings, mosquitoes swarm in large numbers. Adding to the problem, meat shop owners, whose stalls are located opposite the lake, dump the leftovers in the lake. The crows pick up the leftovers and drop them on our premises,” residents complained.

Residents say that steps must be taken at the earliest to stop dumping/burning of garbage in the lake.

This apart, residents have also requested the authorities concerned to shift a wine shop located near the entrance of the Street.

“The tipplers consume liquor on the street and dump the plastic cups, with liquor, and the leftover food in the lake. At night, residents of Anna Street and Cheran Street take a detour through Indira Gandhi Street to reach their homes,” E. Menaka, a resident of Cheran Street, said.
