When the Automated Teller Machine (ATM) came by, it made everyone’s life easier. A few minutes in front of the screen and you have the desired cash in hand. Rightly popularised as Any Time Money, it spoilt people who started wishing for other services to be as quick, even food. Taking the cue from the ATM, Sathish Chamyvelumani, Rajasekaran Mathuram and Ramesh Narayanan have introduced the concept of Food Box.

When you enter the outlet of Atchayam’s Food Box in Koyembedu, you have two screens that clearly explain the process of ordering in three steps. Step 1: Select your food from the menu displayed on the screen. 2: Pay the bill using any credit or debit card. If you only have cash then you can hand over the money to the staff behind the screens, who use the food-box card and swipes it. You then get a printed bill with an order code. 3: Take the bill and watch the screen for your order number and then grab the food coming out on the conveyer beltAll it takes is 90 seconds.

A simple yet important need to get quick hygienic food on the go inspired Satish to initiate the concept. “Every time I travelled on the train or bus, I ended up being hungry. Unsure about the hygiene of the food served in trains, I craved for something healthy. There is an option to get down at a station and buy food from a restaurant but I would risk missing the train,” says Satish, who thought about creating something that delivers food super fast.

After discussing the idea with his partners, the trio put in their skills and resources and visualised Food Box to be a unique concept that was yet to be experimented with.

“We have collaborated with restaurants like Nawaab Sheikh, Moti Mahal, Amravati, Karaikudi, Punjabi Nation, Aasife and Brothers Biriyani and we are in talks with other chains. These restaurants prepare lunch and dinner combos and we provide them with the packing materials. They pack the food and a tempo brings the parcels from the restaurants to the outlet. It is then loaded into the machines and is warmed before it is served. Until you open the lid, no can touch your food after it is sent off from the restaurants. Everything is automated,” says Satish.

The first outlet was launched at the DLF IT Park and then at Koyambedu to attract numerous commuters visiting the bus standThe trio plan to open more chains across Chennai and in other cities as well.

Food Box is at Chennai Deluxe, Block No. 1, plot no 5, E. Road, Thiruvalluvar Street. For details, visit > or call 2232 3600.
