The Federation of Civic and Welfare Associations of Pallavaram and Chromepet, which will convene a general body meeting this month, is expected to adopt a resolution to go on an agitation demanding slash in Underground Drainage System (UGD) rates that have been introduced by the Pallavapuram Municipality.

Federation members said that the Pallavapuram Municipality administration had assured residents that it would take steps to reduce UGD rates after the parliamentary elections.

At present, residents of Chromepet and Pallavaram pay Rs. 450 (quarterly) towards UGD charges. More than 10,000 residents of Chromepet and Pallavaram have UGD connections. At the municipality council meet, held in June, the issue was not taken up by the municipal administration.

“The Pallavapuram Municipality levies Rs.150 as monthly UGD charges as against Rs. 60 charged by the Corporation. The charges should be brought down on par with that of the civic body. The Federation has represented this issue several times to the officials of Pallavapuram municipality and to elected representatives, including Chairman K.M.R. Nissar Ahamed and Pallavaram MLA P. Dhansingh. We have paid more than Rs. 20,000 as deposit and connection fees,” residents of Pallavaram and Chromepet said. Residents said the Pallavapuram Municipality could adopt the cost model by the then Alandur municipality. At the time when Alandur was a municipality, residents were charged on the basis of plinth area house. The rates varied, ranging from Rs.60 to Rs.120, they added.

When contacted, official sources in the Pallavapuram Municipality say no such promises (slashing of UGD rates) were made during the elections. They added that there was at present, no question of slashing down the UGD rates.
