Though the commuters of Mogappair West are relieved to see some improvement to their bus terminus on Third Main Road, they would like to have a few more facilities. According to the Chennai Corporation sources, Rs. 53 lakhs was allocated from the Local Area Development Fund of Maduravoyal MLA G. Beemrao, for various infrastructure projects. One among them is the development of the terminus.
The bus terminus which had many pits has been levelled with concrete now. Cementing the entire surface was over a fortnight ago and construction of time keeper’s office has been completed and finishing touches are being given now. The terminus will have amenities such as water, and restrooms.
After nearly two decades, the bus terminus is getting a facelift. Located in the fast-developing area, the terminus is used by about 30,000 commuters daily. A total of 39 buses on 12 routes are being operated every day from the terminus. The vehicles make about 280 trips on a daily basis.
The Buildings Wing of the Public Works Department has called for tenders and carried out improvement works. S. Seetharaman, a regular commuter said that but for a compound wall constructed a few years ago, the bus terminus lacks facilities.
“We need bus shelters. During rainy days, it is more difficult as the terminus gets inundated. Construction of proper bus bays as provided in the Anna Nagar West Bus terminus is required,” he said. Commuters often miss MTC buses during the rainy season as the vehicles do not halt there.
P.V. Tamilselvan, Member of Ward 91, said he often filled the potholes inside the terminus with the help of sponsors. “Residents are forced to wait outside the terminus or take shelter under trees as there is no roof. The terminus gets flooded even after a slight rain,” he said.
For construction of bus shelters and bus bays he sought the intervention of MTC authorities.
He also said that he has been in touch with sponsors to erect two 60-feet-highmast lamps, one at the entrance and another on the rear side.
Mr. Seetharaman also suggested that gates on two sides and security are the other issues that MTC should take up next.
Mogappair East
Commuters at Mogappair East also face problems as the terminus on Paari Salai is a mess.
During rainy days the entire terminus becomes slushy and commuters are unable to board buses inside the terminus.
They want the concrete work of the surface as done at Mogappair West Terminus.
