In the coming weeks when the summer heat would intensify, those taking Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) buses from many stops in and around Adyar will feel the absence of shelters at many of them.
It has been seven months since a fatal accident occurred near Adyar depot bus stop on LB Road, which also led to the bus shelter getting damaged, but till now, the shelter has not been restored.
It is an important stop as buses going towards Guindy, T. Nagar, Perambur, Ayanavaram, Avadi, ICF, Broadway and Thiruvotruyyur, Ennore stop here and so many commuters wait here.
Similarly, at Gandhi Nagar, bus-stops on either side of Sardar Patel Road do not have shelters.
C. Ravichandran, a commuter, says, “At the Gandhi Nagar bus-stop (which is towards Adyar), trees serve as a shelter. However, the trees can not shield commuters from the summer heat one can expect in April and May.”
The Adyar depot bus-stop on Mahatma Gandhi Nagar Road and Karaikudi also lack shelters. “There is enough space in both these stops for the creation of a shelter, but nothing has been done yet,” says R. Radhika.
Some of the other stops are Madras University - Guindy Campus; Jayanthi; Palvakkam (Route 99); the fish market at Kottivakkam.
According to a Corporation official, around 400 shelters are being installed in and around the city under Build Operate Transfer Scheme.
