Due to lack of proper seating arrangements at the Madras Export Processing Zone (MEPZ) bus stop, commuters have no choice but to cast themselves on the mercy of the elements.

Every day, an impressive number of commuters use the Arignar Anna bus terminus in Tambaram Sanatorium, as it many buses to various parts of the city are operated from here.

The State Express Transport Corporation (SETC) also operates buses from the terminus to other districts.

The maintenance of this Metropolitan Transport Corporation terminal does not match its status. The amount of garbage being dumped there is alarming. The walls are bespattered with splotches of spit tobacco.

“It is so disgusting to see trash being strewn around the terminal. Due to the lack of seating arrangements, commuters stand opposite the SETC terminal. Steps must be taken to clean the premises,” commuters said.

“Moreover, the shelter doesn’t have lighting facilities. At night, commuters waiting at the main thoroughfare should be careful, as the buses take sharp turns, to the horror of commuters,” R. Ankit Tiwari, an IT professional, said.

“Steps should be taken to install boards displaying route numbers, denoting the places covered; and each route number should be given a dedicated slot. As the terminal is quite expansive, commuters are scattered all over the place and they run helter-skelter when they see their route numbers,” a few commuters said.

In addition to these facilities, commuters also demand water kiosks, washroom facilities and renewal centre for bus passes.

“We have to go to the West Tambaram bus terminus for the renewal of passes. If a renewal centre is opened here, it will be of much help to the commuters,” M. Sudha, a commuter, said.
